Choosing to have an abortion is a deeply personal decision. It’s also a serious medical procedure that requires physical and emotional consideration.
Talking with your healthcare provider beforehand provides vital information when considering abortion. The following are some things you’ll want to discuss.
How Will An Abortion Affect You Emotionally?
A couple of months ago, we published a blog titled, “I Already Have Mental Health Problems. Could Abortion Make It Worse?” Research has shown that some women are deeply affected emotionally by their abortions. One study found that the abortion experience directly contributes to mental health problems for at least some women.
You may be worried about sharing your decision with family and friends, fearing they will judge or lecture you. If you feel you cannot confide in your partner, a friend, or a family member, talk with one of our caring Client Advocates at the Pregnancy Resource Center.
Although we do not perform or refer for abortion, we are available to talk with you about your reasons for considering abortion. We understand the concerns you may have.
Discovering an unplanned pregnancy is shocking. It causes women to feel scared, isolated, and desperate. You’re looking for a solution and want to know what to do. We can help you.
Have You Gotten a Thorough Physical Examination?
The Mayo Clinic recommends learning all you can about abortion. They encourage women to learn about the procedures, possible side effects, and risks. The Cleveland Clinic also suggests contacting a healthcare provider who knows your medical history and healthcare needs.
Things you need to learn before choosing to have an abortion are:
- How far along is your pregnancy? The FDA only approves the drugs for the abortion pill method through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
- Is your pregnancy developing, or have you had a miscarriage? Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage.
- Where is your pregnancy located? If your pregnancy is not located in your uterus, it is considered an ectopic pregnancy. This type of pregnancy is extremely dangerous, even life-threatening.
- Determine if you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI). You are at risk.
The easiest way to answer the above questions is to get an ultrasound and STI testing. The Pregnancy Resource Center offers both for free.
